She was born on March 16, 1923, in Brady Township to Ai M. and Annie Pentz Hartzfeld. She spent a happy childhood in Grampian surrounded by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and one sibling, Martin P. Hartzfeld.
Soon after graduating from high school Alta married Charles A. (Lefty) Phillips, just before he was deployed to the European theatre of World War II in 1942. She too contributed to the war effort by working as an inspector in a parachute factory.
In 1956 she moved with her husband and five young children to Markleysburg Pa. where she lived for almost sixty years. She quickly embraced her new community. Making good use of her domestic skills, hobbies, and other interests she served well its civic and religious institutions. In the mid 1960s she took a job as best cook EVER at the local elementary school. After 20 years she retired as food management director of the entire school district that had a student population of 1200.
After losing her husband in 1980, Alta remarried in 1984 Fred Kamp of Markleysburg, who had recently lost his spouse as well. She joyously extended her family to include Fred's three children Robert, James, and Deborah, their spouses Gina, Gerry, and Roger, and his grand- and great grandchildren.
As well as Lefty and Fred, Alta is predeceased by her brother Martin, his wife Leone, and her first born child, Barbara, who died at the tender age of 10 in 1957. She is survived by her daughter Leslie, her son Brett, his wife Barbara, son Dennis, his wife Kathy, son Jeffery, his wife Tonya, eight grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren.
Alta's life will be celebrated at Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home, Inc of Curwensville on Saturday May 11, 2019 at 1 PM with Reverend Glenn Foster officiating. She will find her final resting place at Chestnut Grove beside her parents, brother, husband, and daughter.
