Obituary for Byron 'Barney' Wingard
Byron “Barney” Wingard, 92, of Grampian, passed away Friday October 5, 2012 at the Clearfield Hospital.
 
Born April 10, 1920 in Glen Richey, PA, he was the son of Paul and Ethel (Rowles) Wingard.  Mr. Wingard.  Mr. Wingard had worked for Ashley Carns Contracting and retired from there after 30+ years of service.  He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Grampian, the Grampian American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans.
 

He was a U S Army Veteran of the Second World War having served with the 235th Combat Engineers Battalion and received 2 Purple Hearts, one with a Oak Cluster for wounds received in battle. Battle Campaigns Naples, Foggia,  Rome, Arno,  Ribbons European African Middle Eastern Campaign with 2 bronze battle stars.  And a good conduct medal.

 
On December 18, 1944 at the Curwensville United Methodist Church, he wed the former Mary Almeda Taylor who survives along with 5 children.  Joyce Essex and husband Max of Byrdstown, TN, Ret Col. Karen Wingard of Grampian, JoEllen Bloom of Curwensville, James Earl Wingard and wife Carol of Aliquipa, PA, and Mary Kay Hall and husband Joseph E. of Clearfield.
 
Also surviving are 4 grandchildren Jody Lynn Kipsoi and husband William of Cleveland, Paul T. Serena Jr. and wife Jamie of Clearfield, Ryan J. Hall of Mechanicsburg, and Nicole Leigh Wingard of Aliquipa, a step grandson Jeff Essex of Phoenix, AZ,  3 great granddaughters Caitlyn, Meghan, and Olivia Serena of Clearfield, and 3 step great grandchildren, and a sister-in-law Margaret Wingard of Curwensville.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, a great granddaughter Brooke Serena, a step granddaughter Julie Essex, a son-in-law Richard Bloom, 3 sisters Dole Levine, Alma Geddes, and Sarah Harman, and 2 brothers Mervin, and Lowery Wingard.  He was the last member of his generation.
 
Funeral Services for Mr. Wingard will be held at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home, Inc. of Curwensville, on Tuesday October 9, 2012 at 11:00 AM, with the Reverend Emmett Anderson officiating.  Interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery Curwensville.
 
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday October 8 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM, and Tuesday from 10 AM until time of services.  Military honors will be accorded at the graveside by members of the Clearfield Honor Guard.
