Curwensville: Dorce A. Michaels 83, of Curwensville passed away Friday April 26, 2024 surrounded by his family after a lengthy illness.


Born August 4, 1940 in Lumber City he was the son of Howard and Vivian (Remaley) Michaels. He was a 1958 Curwensville Area High School graduate. Dorce had a career in the grocery industry starting in 1962 with Riverside/Penn Traffic working at various position in the stores located in Johnstown and Philipsburg. In 1967 he went to work for his father-in-law in Curwensville at Goodmans IGA. In 1979, along with his wife Carole they took over ownership/day to day operations of Goodmans Foodliner in Curwensville, Dorce worked there until his retirement in 2019. For over 40 years Dorce greeted and welcomed customers to the store. His friendly personality kept customers coming back. He loved his community and often donated to local charities, organizations, and any one that needed help.


He was a member of the Curwensville United Methodist Church where he served on numerous committees, was a member of the cast of the Search for Peace for over 50 years, received the Curwensville Rotary Clubs Citizen of the Year award in 2011, was a life member of the Rescue Hose and Ladder Company station 8 in Curwensville, and was a former member of Curwensville Jaycees. His additional hobbies included participating in a bowling league and golfing every chance he got. Dorce was very fortunate to be able to travel to many places with the love of his life.


On June 24, 1962 at the Curwensville United Methodist Church, he wed Carole L. (Goodman) Michaels and had a loving marriage for 61 years. Carole, of Curwensville survives along with 2 daughters Denise R. Mullins (Stacey) of State College, and Diane S. Holland (Dean) Curwensville. 4 grandchildren Ryan S. Mullins (Sydney) of Somerville, MA, Courtney R. Laukitis (Kyle) of New Carlisle, OH, Lauren E. Holland and significant other (Shay Flanagan), and Danielle N. Holland all of Curwensville. And a great grandson Henry J. Mullins. He is also survived by a sister, Betty J. Test (Duane) of Curwensville. Brother In Laws Richard Wilkinson of Curwensville, Bob Goodman (Jan) of Alexandria, PA and sister-in- law Ethel Goodman of FL, Gaye Michaels of NY, and Janet Michaels of Grampian PA. As well as numerous nieces and nephews. Time spent with family was an important part of Dorce’s life.


He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Wallace, Jim, Jack, Bob and Gary, and a sister, Sally Barrett


A Celebration of life service will be held on Sunday May 5, 2024 at the Curwensville United Methodist Church at 3 PM with Pastor Don Smith and Pastor Ethan Shearer officiating.


Family and friends will be received at the church from 1 PM till the time of services at 3 PM.


The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Curwensville United Methodist Church Mission or Kitchen Funds 602 State St. Curwensville, PA 16833, and the Alzheimer’s Association www.alz.org.


The family would like to Thank AseraCare Hospice and his faithful caretakers Denise, Anna, and Julie for their wonderful care.
