Obituary for Dr. Thomas J. Stuart
Thomas J. Stuart, MD, 89, of Clearfield, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at his residence. Born December 26, 1925, in Newark, NJ, he was a son of William and Julia Stuart. He attended St. Benedict’s Prep, Newark, NJ and at age 16, graduated first in his class. He went on to Seton Hall University before he joined the U S Navy, where he attained the rank of Petty Officer Third Class. He was a veteran of World War II. After his service he completed his BA at St. Peter’s College, Jersey City, NJ and earned his masters degree and medical degree at Georgetown University. He completed a neurology residency at the VA Hospital in Richmond, Virginia and served two years at Walter Reed Medical Center, Washington, D.C.
Dr. Stuart began his neurology practice in Lancaster in September 1961 and was on the staff of Lancaster General Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital. He held leadership posts at Lancaster General that spanned more than 30 years. He was Chief of Neurology from 1968 to 1994, served as vice-president of the medical and dental staff from 1979 to 1981, and president from 1982 to 1984.
In retirement he devoted his efforts and enthusiastic support to land conservancy and served as a board member and Chairman of Lancaster County Conservancy. He was an avid sailor, historian, artist and writer who enjoyed keeping up with current events. His greatest joy was spending time with his family.
He was married to the former Virginia Ryall, who preceded him in death in May 2008. Dr. Stuart is survived by four sons, Thomas J. Stuart Jr. of Clearfield, Richard F. (Donnis) Stuart of New York, NY, Matthew J. (Margie) Stuart of Brooklyn, NY, Paul A. Stuart of New York, NY and a daughter, Anita R. Stuart of Boston, Mass.
He is also survived by five grandchildren, Danielle Boyles, Thomas J. Stuart III, Andrew P. Stuart, Natalie N. Stuart and Beverly Bankus; also great-grandchildren Abigail, Ashley, Sydney, Jasmin, Andrielle, Ivan and Raoul.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Stuart.
There will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
