Staff Sergeant Joseph A. Brock
Pottsville: Staff Sergeant Joseph A. Brock, 38, of Lake Wyonah, Auburn, PA, passed away Monday morning February 16, 2009.
Born June 8, 1970 in Clearfield, PA, he was the son of Joseph E. and Mary Ann (Polites) Brock. Staff Sergeant Brock was currently serving with the 2nd BN, 166th Regiment Regional Training Institute in Ft. Indiantown Gap, PA, and prior to that had served with Co. B 728th Maintenance BN, Clearfield, PA, Co B 228th FSB Clearfield, PA, Co B 728th MSB Pine Grove, PA, Co E 728th MSB Clearfield PA, Co B 728th Support BN Pine Grove PA, and the 3rd BN 166th Regiment Regional Training Institute Ft. Indiantown Gap, PA. While in Kosovo, he performed rotations instructing PLDC while with the 3rd BN, 166th Regt.
He had been deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom from 8-15-2002 until 2-22-2003 and then deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2-23-2004 until 2-28-2005. He had been promoted to Staff Sergeant on 11-7-2002. He received the following awards: Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Driver and mechanic Badge, Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal W/M Device, Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Non-Commissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, NATO Medal – NATO Service Former Republic of Yugoslavia, Combat Action Badge, General Thomas J. Stewart Medal, Major General Thomas R. White Jr. Medal, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal.
Surviving is his parents of Curwensville, his wife the former Heather Dixon whom he wed on January 18, 2004, and the following children: Anthony and Harley Brock of Houtzdale, PA, Kali Brock of Auburn, PA, and stepchildren Brittany Brant and Jerry Lansberry of Auburn, PA
Also surviving are 4 sisters: Susan Pitrone and husband Bernie of DuBois PA, Nancy Blackburn and husband Scott of Curwensville PA, Sharon Nilson and husband Tim of Snow Shoe PA, and Dawn Brock and Fiancée Douglas Smeal of Auburn, PA, as well as several Aunts, Uncles, Nieces and Nephews.
He was preceded in death by his Maternal grandparents Anthony and Helen Polites and Paternal Grandparents Earl and Verna Brock.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Timothy’s Roman Catholic Church 306 Walnut St. Curwensville, PA on Saturday February 21, 2009 at 11:00 AM, with the Reverend Father Mark S. Swoger as celebrant. Interment will be in the Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
Friends will be received at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home, Inc. 300 State St. Curwensville, PA on Friday February 20, 2009 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 PM, and Saturday from 9 until 10:30 AM, when the procession will depart for the church.. A Scripture Vigil Services will be conducted Friday at 2 PM with the Rosary to be recited at 3 PM Friday, both at the funeral home.
The family suggests contributions be made to the American Red Cross at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital, ATTN: for Wounded Soldiers, 6900 Georgia Avenue NW, Building 2 Room 3EZ5, Washington, DC 20307
