Born August 6, 1940 in Spangler (Northern Cambria), PA, he was the son of Paul and Mary (Hook) Bakaysa. Joe retired as the Head of the Finals Depart at the PennDoT Clearfield office, where he worked for over 40 years.
Joe’s faith was an integral part of his life, finding joy in spreading His word. An active member of the Curwensville United Methodist Church, he was well known for his role as a Wiseman in the church’s annual “Search for Peace” Christmas pageant for over 45 years. He also served in various leadership roles across numerous church committees, including the Missions Committee. He began each day with his morning devotion.
Joe was dedicated to community service. He was a longtime member of the former Curwensville Rotary Club where he served multiple terms as President, served on various committees, and was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow for his contributions to Rotary International. Joe was a member of the former Curwensville JayCee’s, a life member of the Curwensville Rescue Hose and Ladder Co. and a volunteer in the EMS Service. He was a former member, and past Treasurer, of the Curwensville Civic Center (Curwensville Community Center) and the Curwensville Municipal Authority Board.
Equal to his faith and community service was Joe’s love of family. Forever known as “Pap”, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and supporting them in their many, diverse activities and interests. Watching sporting events, making vacation memories, and crowding around the table for family dinners filled his heart. He greeted everyone with a caring smile that warmed the room.
On November 11, 1961 in the Cherry Corner Church, he wed the former Peggy L. Junod who survives along with three sons: Joseph M. Bakaysa and wife Tracy and their children Christian and Alyssa of Curwensville, PA, Gregory S. Bakaysa and daughter-in-law Julie Bakaysa and their children Jared and Elle of Curwensville, PA, and Brian Bakaysa and wife Diane and their children Katie and Nick of Zionsville, IN. Also surviving is his sister Margaret Bakaysa of Clearfield, PA.
