Obituary for Orlando 'Bung' Carfley
Orlando “Bung” Carfley, 98, of Clearfield, died peacefully on Friday Morning November 2, 2012 at the Clearfield Hospital, after a long and courageous battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma & Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia.
 
Mr. Carfley was born on April 17, 1914 in Curwensville, the son of John and Rufina (Finelli) Carfley.  He graduated from Curwensville High School where he was recognized as an outstanding football player. He was employed as an electrician at the North American Refractories Co. (NARCO) for many years until he retired at age 65, and was a member of St. Francis Roman Catholic Church in Clearfield
 
Mr. Carfley enlisted in the Navy during WWII and engaged the enemy in the Pacific Theatre in numerous battles while stationed aboard the Destroyer, USS Aaron Ward.  He sustained several wounds during one such battle, was transported to a military hospital in New Zealand for treatment, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
 
Up until his most recent hospitalization, Mr. Carfley remained active as a Volunteer for many years at Clearfield Hospital and has been recognized for his countless hours of service.  He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.  He enjoyed time spent with his daughters, his grandchildren, and his great grandchildren.  He also enjoyed meeting his friends at the Clearfield McDonald’s and also greeting people at the volunteer station in the Clearfield Hospital
 
In 1941 he wed his sweetheart the former Tillie Rebo and had the good fortune to be together for 65 years until her death in March of 2007.  He was also preceded in death by his parents, 10 brothers and sisters and his son-in-law Dennis Boal
 
Survived are his two daughters, Elaine Boal of Clearfield and Darlene McEnaney & her husband Kevin of Bartlett, New Hampshire; three grandchildren, Brenda Boal of Indiana, PA, Barbara Winckler and her husband, Larry of Indiana, PA and Jaime Boal of Conshohocken, PA; two great grandchildren, Lexi & Brett Winckler of Indiana, PA;  and his brother, Francis (“Feo”) Carfley of Clearfield; as well as numerous nieces & nephews.
 
Funeral Services for Mr. Carfley will be held at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home, Inc. 16 North Front Street Clearfield on Tuesday November 6, 2012 at 10:30 AM, with Msgr. H. Desmond McGee Jr. officiating.  Interment will be in the Hill Crest Cemetery Clearfield. 
 
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday November 5, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM, and Tuesday from 9 AM until time of services.
 
Military Honors will be accorded at the graveside by members of the Clearfield Honor Guard.
