Randy L. “Butch” Nelson


Olanta: Randy L. “Butch” Nelson, 72, of Olanta passed away Tuesday January 7, 2025.


Born September 2, 1952 in Philipsburg he was the son of Lewis and Charlotte (McKendrick) Nelson. He was a 1970 graduate of Clearfield Area High School. He had worked for Guelich Explosives and Orica as a blaster and office manager. He most recently worked at Gates Hardware in Curwensville.


He was a United States Air Force Veteran serving during the Vietnam War.


Butch was also very active in Curwensville Football and Wrestling, where he helped paint the football field, ran the chains during football games, and also helped with announcing in the booth. Butch coached Elementary Wrestling in Curwensville and Clearfield. He helped with various parts of the Curwensville Wrestling program.

He also was a member of the Glen Richey Sportsmans Association.


On April 11, 1981 at Fruit Hill Church in Ansonville, he wed Sandy (Merry) Nelson who survives of Olanta. Two children Amanda Nelson of Philipsburg, and Brandon “Needle” Nelson of Curwensville. Brothers and sisters Charlotte Lou Smith of OH, Terry Palovcsik (Denny), Chuck Nelson (Edie), Roger Nelson (Cathy), and Brenda Carter (Ed) all of Clearfield. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.


He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Joni Lou Nelson, and a brother-in-law David Smith.


A Memorial service will be held at the Glen Richey Firehall on Saturday January 11, 2025 at 1 PM with Pastor Leanne Peters officiating. Military honors will be accorded at the Firehall by members of the Clearfield Honor Guard.


Family and friends will be received at the Glen Richey Firehall from 11 AM till the time of the services at 1 PM.
