Born October 1, 1942 in Clearfield, he was the son of Stanley “Peno” and Wilna (McGarvey) Thurston. Mr. Thurston was a surveyor having worked for Hess & Fisher, Hepburnia Coal Company and HRI Construction Company. He also had worked for the former Battery Warehouse in Clearfield.
He attended the Valley Forge Military Academy and also the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado. He also was retired as a Master Sergeant in the Air National Guard after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church where he had served as Song Leader, Worship Leader and Building Trustee. He was also a member of the New Millport Picnic Association. The New Millport Cemetery Association and the Curwensville VFW.
On August 3, 1963 in the Salem Lutheran Church, he wed the former Betty Lorraine Irwin who preceded him in death on November 17, 2017. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a son Roger James Thurston.
Surviving are four grandchildren: Israel Rain Thurston of Curwensville, Lindsay Nicole Thurston and Cecelia Pearl Thurston both of Boyertown, and Ethan James Luzier of Clearfield. Also surviving is a great grandson Izaick Thurston of Curwensville and two sisters and two brothers: Icie M. Redden of New Millport, Dwight F. Thurston and Trudy E. Adam both of Clearfield and Dana C. Thurston of Binghamton, NY as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Roger S. Thurston will be held at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home, Inc. of Curwensville on Thursday July 26. 2018 at 10:00 AM, with Pastor Richard Steuernagle officiating. Interment will be in the Williams Cemetery in New Millport.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Wednesday July 25 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM and again on Thursday from 9 AM until time of services at 10 AM. Military Honors will be accorded at the cemetery.
