Obituary for Thomas F. "Tom" Wassil

Thomas F. “Tom” Wassil, 64, of Curwensville, passed away Saturday August 29, 2009 at his residence after a lengthy illness.



Born September 9, 1945 in Lilly, PA, he was the son of Catherine (Kurchesky) Leap.  Mr. Wassil retired as an Elementary School Teacher in the Curwensville Area School District in June of 2003 after 35 years of service.  He was a graduate of Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and was an Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam War.



He was a member of the Curwensville American Legion Post 505, the Curwensville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 842, and had coached the Curwensville Moose Little League Team for many years.
 


On August 3, 1974, in Sharon, PA, he wed the former Kathy Moore who survives along with his mother of Lilly, PA, and 2 sons.  Eric Wassil of Curwensville and Matt Wassil of Clearfield.  Also surviving is a granddaughter Kealy Wassil, 2 grandsons Andrew and Tyus Wassil, and 3 brothers.  Joseph Wassil of Maryland, William “Bill” Wassil and his wife Carla of Florida, and Robert “Bobbi” Leap of New Jersey.



He was preceded in death by his stepfather Elmer J. Leap and an infant sister Eva Wassil.



Services for Mr. Wassil will be held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Sixth Street Grampian, on Wednesday September 2, 2009 at 11:00 AM, with the Reverend Emmett Anderson officiating.  Interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Curwensville.



Friends will be received at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home, Inc. of Curwensville on Tuesday September 1 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM, and Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 AM, when the procession will depart for the church.



Military Honors will be accorded at the cemetery by members of the Clearfield American Legion and Clearfield VFW Joint Honor Guard.



The family suggests contributions be made to the Thomas F. Wassil Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of the Clearfield Bank and Trust Company, Curwensville Branch, P.O. Box 171  Clearfield, PA  16830.
